Kath Worrell Cup Competition - Finals Day!
A fiercely-contested match saw Watford side Flames Storm crowned champions in the first-ever Kath Worrell Cup final.
Flames ran out 40-26 winners against Gadeside 2 at Parmiters School, Garston, on Sunday March 13. The match was highly competitive and although Flames were never behind, Gadeside stayed within touching distance of the eventual winners until the final quarter.
Hertfordshire Mavericks’ defender Sam May presented the trophy and also nominated Flames GS Jo Dentandt as her player of the match. The Superleague player, who has represented Australia at U21, said: “Jo was calm and collected throughout, she put up some marvellous shots and created great attacking play throughout.”
Ten teams playing at varying levels have taken part in the cup in its first year, with several of them starting matches with a 20-goal lead to create a level field. The third-place playoff saw Shelley Pick & Mix beat the Gadeside 1 team by 58 goals to 43, as they fiercely protected their 20-goal head start to create a highly competitive match. Gadeside 2 shooter Claire Munt was named overall player of the tournament, having received the highest number of ‘Most Valuable Player’ nominations during Cup games.
The cup competition was introduced this season in memory of Watford Netball League co-founder Kath Worrell, who died in 2014. Kath was a Life Member of Hertfordshire County Netball Association, awarded for her outstanding contribution to the sport in the county. She received the MBE for services to netball in 2004 and her husband Brian, also a netball umpire, watched the Cup final from the sidelines.
